How to Master the Art of the French Bob

French bob. You’ve no doubt heard those two words sandwiched together countless times, whether on your Instagram slash TikTok feed, at your local salon, or even here on this very website. Alongside mullets and shags, the French bob is one of the trendiest haircuts of the past couple of years, and with good reason. As hairstylist Joseph Maine reveals in our Skinfluencer video series, this chic yet laid-back haircut is incredibly simple — so much so that it seems too good to be true.

But as you’ll witness with your own eyes, it really is; Maine cuts a French bob on a client in mere moments by cutting one blunt, chin-length layer, then using the point-cutting technique to take some bulk out of the bottom. And the process of styling that bob haircut with a little texture and lift is just as quick.

To start, Maine douses wet, freshly cut hair in Color Wow’s Dream Coat [Maine is the brand’s artistic director], a heat-activated shine treatment, before blow-drying and adding some subtle flatiron waves. R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste and Maui Moisture Smooth & Repair + Vanilla Bean Oil Mist seal in the texture and shine of the whole look.

That’s really all it takes to master the French bob: three products, two tools, and a few minutes. Chances are you already own almost everything you need, too. All that’s left — if you didn’t already do it while watching Maine work his magic — is to call your hairstylist and book an appointment.
